Nicolai Howalt is a Danish photographer whose work spans portraits to landscapes to more abstracted work. Car crash studies- which is indicative of the latter- features tight shots of convoluted steel and cracked paint that are the result of car accidents. On a conceptual level, it’s quite fascinating since many of the cars were involved in severe of potentially fatal accidents, and Howalt has rendered this destructive ‘base’ as something abstractly beautiful. What’s interesting is that many of the images from this series look very much like Gerhard Richter’s post 2005 abstract paintings.
